Hatching the Past: Dinosaur Eggs
Section 3 - Sauropod Eggs
A collection of sauropod dinosaur eggs from around the world is complimented by artwork by Luis Rey that was commissioned for this exhibition. It shows a huge nesting site found in the Patagonian Desert in 1997. A flat area about 15 miles long, where paleontologists found layer after layer of eggs, nests and embryos.

Displays, images and interactives in this section include:
  • Sauropod Eggs Section Panel 3
  • Sauropod Nesting Grounds Exploration and Discovery Panel 3
  • Framed artwork (below)
  • Framed photograph by Louie Psihoyos
  • A collection Sauropod eggs from France, India and Argentina
  • Sauropod Film
  • Dig pit for kids to discover sauropod eggs
New artwork by Luis Rey based on a vast sauropod nesting site discovered in Argentina by a team of scientists from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County led by Luis Chiappe.
Chiappe believes the adults were too large to stay near the nest and care for the hatchlings. He thinks that at least some adults guarded the colony to protect them from predators. This scene by Luis Rey shows the adults protecting the colony from some distance away.
